‘Standard’ Pneumatic Service Brake Chambers

Pneumatic Service Brake Chambers are mechanical actuators otherwise known as Air Chambers, that convert air pressure from the vehicle’s braking system into mechanical force to apply the brakes. These are single-diaphragm units typically used on service brakes (not parking or emergency brakes) and are equipped with internal return springs to ensure the brake releases when air pressure is removed.

ACT36 TYPE 36 AIR CHAMBER TYPE 36 15,000 N

Key Features:

  • Air-Operated Diaphragm Chamber
Converts compressed air pressure into linear pushrod movement to apply the brakes.
  • Internal Return Spring
Ensures the pushrod retracts when air pressure is vented, releasing the brake.
  • Robust Housing
Typically steel, sealed against dust and moisture to withstand harsh environments.
  • Standardized Mounting & Pushrod Lengths
Compatible with common trailer and vehicle brake systems.

Typical Specifications:

  • Operating Pressure: 6–8 bar (87–116 psi)
  • Pushrod Stroke: 64 mm to 76 mm (2.5–3.0 inches)
  • Diaphragm Sizes: 12, 16, 20, 24, 30 (refers to square inches of diaphragm area)

Advantages:

  • Simple, reliable brake actuation using compressed air
  • Internal return spring reduces risk of brake drag
  • Easy to service and replace
  • Cost-effective and widely available

Common Applications:

Semi-trailers / Rigid trucks / Agricultural trailers /Construction and forestry towed equipment
