‘Standard’ Brake Cylinders
A displacement-type single-acting hydraulic cylinder used for agricultural trailer brakes is a simple hydraulic ram that activates the brakes on the trailer when hydraulic pressure from the towing vehicle (tractor) is applied. Single-acting means it only pushes (activates the brake) when fluid pressure is sent in. When the pressure is released, the brake lets go on its own by the brake mechanism returning to rest.
In farm use, you don’t want to be constantly fixing trailer brakes. So these cylinders are designed to:
- Have few moving parts
- Be well-sealed to keep out dust, water, and mud
- Use corrosion-resistant materials (especially important for muddy or wet fields)
- Be fully enclosed using self-lubricating parts

This design means the cylinder can last for years with little or no maintenance, assuming it’s used properly. Agricultural trailers only need braking force in one direction (when stopping), so a simple push-type cylinder works great. These cylinders are compact, reliable, and affordable. They hook directly to the tractor’s hydraulic system – no need for air brakes or complex systems.
