‘Dual Supply’ Pneumatic/Hydraulic Actuators

The dual supply pneumatic/hydraulic brake actuators, are commonly used in agricultural trailers to provide flexibility in braking systems by giving the operator the choice of air or oil service brakes, especially when different towing vehicles may have different braking capabilities (some with air brakes, others with hydraulic brakes).

What Are Dual Supply Brake Actuators?

These are combination brake actuators that allow a trailer to be braked using either a pneumatic (air) or hydraulic (oil) supply/signal, depending on the towing vehicle’s configuration. They are particularly useful for agricultural applications where equipment is frequently swapped between different towing machines.

Key Components:

  1. Pneumatic Brake Chamber:
    • Functions like a traditional air brake actuator.
    • Air pressure moves a diaphragm / piston to apply braking force.
    • Includes an internal return spring to release the brake when air pressure is removed.
  2. Hydraulic Displacement Cylinder:
    • Allows actuation of the brakes via hydraulic pressure.
    • Also includes a return spring to return the piston to its resting position once pressure is released.

How It Works:

  • Air or hydraulic pressure is supplied by the towing vehicle.
  • The actuator detects which type of input is present and allows that system to engage the braking mechanism.
  • Only one system (air or hydraulic) operates at a time.
  • The internal return springs ensure the brake releases after pressure is removed, regardless of the input method.

Advantages:

  • Versatility: Can be used with tractors or trucks with different braking systems.
  • Cost-effective: Avoids the need for multiple brake systems or trailer modifications.
  • Safety: Reliable braking with return springs to ensure brake release.
